The Spanish government is planning a spectrum auction next month through which it hopes to give local operators access to more 5G spectrum. The final tender requirements for the 26 GHz band were announced in a release by the Department of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure. The upcoming spectrum auction will conclude the process of allowing carriers access to all selected bands for the deployment of 5G networks and services, according to the government. The government said the final tender requirements for the 26 GHz spectrum have been revealed after extensive dialogue with industry beginning in December 2021.
All national concessions will cost 4 million euros to start
The government hopes to issue a total of 12 national concessions in the 25.10–27.50 GHz band and 38 regional concessions in the 24.70–25.10 GHz band. The concession is made in accordance with the technical guidelines established by the European Commission on the harmonization of his 24.25-27.5 GHz frequency band for terrestrial systems capable of providing wireless broadband electronic communication services in the European Union.
There is a base price of €4 million ($4 million) for each concession in each country. For local concessions, the starting price is inversely related to the population of the autonomous community or city in question. The concession lasts for 20 years and can be extended once for another 20 years.
A 700 MHz spectrum auction in July 2021 will bring a total of €1.1 billion to the Spanish government and local operators Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange to develop 5G services using these key frequencies got the rights. According to the Spanish Ministry of Economy, each 700 MHz license is valid for a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 40 years.
Only two operators, Orange and Telefónica, participated in the final auction, each paying a starting price of €21 million for 10 MHz blocks.
