Business-minded Palo Alto High School students consider new spring educational opportunities after Wednesday’s briefing on the Enterprise Leadership Conference at PRIME.
ELC is an annual event where approximately 60 high school seniors in the Silicon Valley area are chosen to focus on developing business and business-related skills.
This conference is fully sponsored by various local Rotary clubs that are part of the global Rotary Humanitarian Organization. Participating students can participate without paying any tuition or fees.
Students were able to sign up for a PRIME information session at the library this week. Two speakers came and he spoke in detail about his three-day conference from March 29th to March 31st next year.
According to the ELC website, the program centers around entrepreneurship and creativity.
Over three days, students form groups of six from various schools to participate in team building activities and listen to keynote speeches. The final project of the program is a PowerPoint presentation detailing the new business proposed by each group.
Chris Olson, one of the speakers encouraging students to apply, has previous ELC counseling experience.
“If you’re thinking of a product or service . . . this is a great way to understand everything you need to bring that product or service to life,” says Olsson.
According to Olsson, ELC is indeed primarily an educational experience, but it also allows participants to make very strong connections in a very short amount of time.
“[ELC is] It’s not just about working,” said Olsen. “There’s a bond there, and a variety of activities just to release tension and have fun.”
One of the juniors who participated, Coral Johnson, was considering applying to gain experience in expanding his cookie business.
“It seems like a very unique experience,” Johnson said.
Another conference attendee, Jacqueline Li Jr., shared similar sentiments.
“this [ELC] It’s a really great opportunity,” Lee said. “It looks really interesting and it’s going to be really fun [to take part in] outside our school curriculum. ”
However, Lee was concerned about the timing of the meeting.
“It’s school hours and it’s just before spring break, so it can be very inconvenient,” says Li. “Especially tests and everything gets in the way”
