PARKERSBURG — Sunset Memorial Funeral Home announced Monday that Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery will be dedicated on Friday as the only Purple Heart Cemetery in West Virginia and the Mid-Ohio Valley.
General Manager Dwight Ullman said the state would approve the cemetery in a proclamation dedicating Sunset Cemetery as the only Purple Heart cemetery in West Virginia and the Mid-Ohio Valley.
The event will take place Friday at 1:00 pm inside the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home at 1934 Dupont Road (W.Va. 95) south of Parkersburg.
“It’s an honor for us.” Ullman said. “We are very excited and delighted that this will come to fruition.”
The Sunset Memorial welcomes veterans, Purple Heart recipients, and the families of Purple Heart recipients to join the celebration, Ullman said. The Purple Heart is a medal awarded to those who died or were injured during military service.
Sunset Memorial Fridays 9am-3pm for annual food drive for the American Association of Veterans with Disabilities (DAV) and Christmas gifts for children in need in the Mid-Ohio Valley There will also be a Toy for Tots Drive to help you collect. .
“It’s an honor for us to do something for our veterans, because we all know we wouldn’t be where we are today without them.” He said.
Ullman said he feels the importance of recognizing veterans because they are often forgotten and should be recognized and remembered for their achievements. Most veterans who receive it don’t tell others about their achievements.
“They see it as a personal honor and don’t make a big deal out of it.” He said. “When you talk to veterans who served in World War II, they don’t talk about everything they saw in combat.”
The next step, Ullman said, is to find out how many Purple Heart recipients are veterans buried at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. He said he plans to incorporate a wall into the Veterans Garden to honor veterans who have received the Purple Heart.
