Almost everyone who buys a product online at least skims through reviews to see how other customers like the product.

Unfortunately, those ratings may not be of much value. In fact, in many cases they can be downright misleading.

Recently, Fakespot, a site that “finds, analyzes, and identifies fake reviews and counterfeits,” provided an overview. Categories with the most fake reviews on Amazon.

Fakespot assigns the following ratings to reviews:

“A and B: Trusted reviews

Ha: Mix of Trusted and Untrusted Reviews

D and F: not enough reliable reviews”

Fakespot ranked the following product categories based on the percentage of reviews with a rating of ‘C’ or lower:

5. Watch (Tie)

“Hmm! Buddy, would you like to buy a watch?”

Those of us of a certain age remember the old comedy lines usually uttered by dishonest salespeople walking down the street. has moved to

Unlike classic scams, you’re unlikely to pry open a watch and discover that the case has no mechanical workings. But thanks to fake reviews, you might end up buying something that isn’t up to the standard you expected.

5. Christmas tree and decorations (tie)

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot grade of ‘C’ or lower: 45%

Talk about Grinch-like behavior: Who would ruin your family’s holiday season by deliberately channeling it into poor quality trees and decorations?

Believe it or not, many sellers of these items have such fraudulent ratings. Fakespot founder and CEO Saoud Khalifah said, “Sellers know that if they rank in the top five with fake reviews, they could make or break sales this holiday season.” I’m here.

If Santa is paying attention, he knows where to deliver that nugget of coal this year.

3. Smartwatch band

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot grade of ‘C’ or lower: 45.3%

Apparently, just tracking down people buying old-school watches isn’t enough for Rapcalion reviewers. It also targets people who buy smartwatch bands.

As Khalifah points out, bands are accessories that are likely to pique the interest of just about anyone who buys a smartwatch. This product therefore provides fertile soil to mislead shoppers who are ready to consume.

2. Pullovers and sweaters

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot grade of ‘C’ or lower: 59.5%

The number one requirement for a pullover or sweater is to keep you warm and to last through washing. But ruthless reviewers don’t care much about it.

Instead, they want to sell.

Khalifa said fake reviews are common in this category. Because unethical sellers know people love to wear fun sweaters to family gatherings.

1. Slippers

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot grade of ‘C’ or lower: 71%

Finally, fake reviews go completely beyond the slippers category.

That’s right, slippers.

Khalifa says she was surprised the category had so many fake reviews. Still, he says, if you peruse slipper sellers on Amazon, you can find “obscure brands with tens of thousands of reviews.”

It’s a surefire weirdness that screams “fake reviews,” if at all.
