These Mississippi Chef James Beard’s Semi-Finalist Restaurants – Best Food and Dining in the Nation

When it comes to food, Mississippi’s three restaurants not only wow Magnolia diners, but are also noted by some of the country’s best chefs and food critics.
One Mississippi restaurant and three chefs have been named semi-finalists for the annual James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards.
A list of semi-finalists, announced last week, honors the best food and dining in the country.
Sambou’s African Kitchen in Jackson was named a semi-finalist in the Best New Restaurants category.
In 2022, we were notified when one of the restaurant’s oxtails was named to the New York Times list of unforgettable dishes.
The oxtail at Samboo’s African Kitchen on Jackson’s County Line Road features a “gingery” gravy that’s “spoon-worthy” and served over coconut rice, the paper reported. I’m here.
Sambou’s was founded by Joseph Sambou earlier this year. The full-service restaurant serves unique African cuisine. According to the restaurant’s website, Sambu started his business after discovering how badly African food was underrated in Mississippi and the surrounding area. Sambou’s menu is primarily West African. Many of the dishes feature beans, fresh seafood, dried fish and meats, all combined with fresh ingredients to blend savory flavors.
Along with Sambou’s African Kitchen, three other chefs earned semi-finalist honors in the Best Chefs of the South category.
Hunter Evans of Jackson’s restaurant Elvie’s was mentioned, along with Alex Perry and Kumi Omori of Ocean Springs restaurant Vestige.
Located in Belhaven’s historic Jackson neighborhood, Elby’s is an all-day café serving seasonal cuisine with a Southern farmhouse focus. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Reservations are recommended as this is a small and popular restaurant.
Vestige is a contemporary American restaurant in beautiful and historic downtown Ocean Springs, locally owned by Ocean Springs native Chef Alex Perry and his wife Kumi Omori. The restaurant’s cuisine is often inspired by the Japanese flavors and techniques that Omori grew up with. The restaurant is open for dinner only from Tuesday to Saturday. Reservations are highly recommended.
On March 29th, the semi-finalists will be narrowed down, and 23 nominations will be announced. Winners in each category will then be announced at an awards ceremony on June 5th at Chicago’s Lyric Opera.
The James Beard Foundation is a non-profit organization whose “mission is to celebrate, support, and advance the people behind America’s food culture, and to set good food standards rooted in talent, equity, and sustainability. to defend.”
The James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards were created in 1990 and first awarded in 1991.
