United Airlines announced positive changes to how members can earn Premier status in 2024, increasing the opportunity to earn Premier Qualifying Points. Airline loyalty programs rarely open up more opportunities to earn status without increasing the threshold it takes to get there. Delta recently overhauled its loyalty program and card benefits, much to the chagrin of its members. The good news with these United updates is that the requirements to earn Premier status will remain the same in 2024.
Upgrades To Earning and Maintaining United Status
Jumpstart Your PQP
Earlier this year, United implemented significant improvements to its MileagePlus Premier program. The airline offered a jumpstart to each status level to make retaining status easier. The number of points United will spot you depends on your status the previous year. Here is what Premier members can expect to see deposited to their accounts on February 1, 2024.
Earn PQP Faster With Credit Card Spend
Chase United cardholders have the opportunity to spend more money to earn more PQPs in 2024. Now, card members can earn in smaller increments: earn 25 PQP for every $500 spent on eligible MileagePlus credit cards. Before this change, cardholders could get 500 PQP after spending $12,000. The new earn rate requires a spend of $12,500 to reach 500 PQP, but this is still a net positive because you’ll see the PQP hit your account faster and more frequently.
No More Cap on PQP Credit Card Earning
United has removed the annual cap of 15,000 PQP members can earn from spending on multiple United MileagePlus cards. With the cap removed, MileagePlus members have the opportunity to reach status with more spend on a credit card and rely less on flying.
Higher PQP Earning Limits on the United Club℠ Infinite Card
One United card will see an increase in the maximum amount of PQP that can be earned annually. Earnings on the United Club℠ Infinite Card increase from 8,000 PQP in 2023 to 10,000 PQP in 2024 with qualified purchases.
Card-Earned PQP for 1K Status
Now, all PQP earned from your United credit card will count toward each status level. That includes the PQP-only requirement for earning Premier 1K status.
Award Tickets Now Count Toward Status
Another major update United made earlier this year is that award flights on United and United Express are now eligible to earn Premier qualifying credits to help reach status. Award flights can earn 1 PQP for every 100 miles redeemed and 1 Premier Qualifying Flight per flight. These earnings now count toward all status levels.
It’s important to remember that all MileagePlus members are required to take at least four flights on United or United Express during the earning period in order to be eligible for any Premier status.
Bottom Line
While some competitors move to devalue their loyalty programs, United is holding to its requirements for earning elite status and giving loyalty members even more opportunities to reach and maintain status. Combine these upgrades with the increased welcome offers on United credit cards, and you’ll be flying in style in no time.
