A university in Ohio has been awarded more than $300,000 in state grants to bolster its nearby manufacturing sector, state and campus officials said.
The University of Miami will receive a total of $308,750 from the state’s Department of Higher Education through the Southwest Ohio Regional Skills Delivery Priorities (RAPIDS) grant program. Miami has partnered with the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College to form a regional program.
Miami officials said the aim of the award is to offer more courses in smart manufacturing, including robotics, additive manufacturing and other advanced industrial technologies. We will fund the purchase of two more industrial robots for our Oxford, Ohio campus, and will incorporate smart factory operations into our mechanical engineering department in Miami. Meanwhile, regional university campuses will be able to offer more training on programmable logic controllers and human-machine interface systems.
The Miami engineer said the entire grant would modernize the university’s manufacturing engineering platform. Randy Gardner, president of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, added that the funding will help strengthen courses offered by the university and help better prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing.
