DETROIT (AP) — A U.S. government traffic safety agency is investigating complaints that the windshield trim panels of Ford Explorers can fly off while driving on the highway.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there were 164 complaints of missing trim pieces on Explorer SUVs from 2011 to 2019. About 1.86 million vehicles were surveyed.
Officials said the parts could hit the windshield of the vehicle behind or the motorcycle rider, causing them to lose control and crash.
The agency has no reports of crashes or injuries, according to documents posted Tuesday.
NHTSA says it will determine how often the problem occurs and the safety consequences of trim parts flying off the vehicle.
An investigation may lead to a recall, but so far there has been no recall.
Ford says it is cooperating with NHTSA on the investigation.
