“Verizon remains committed to making these channels available to customers, but we cannot agree to such an unwarranted increase.”
Verizon Fios customers in Boston and several other parts of the country may soon be unable to view Fox’s affiliate network.
The company recently told customers it was in talks with Cox Media Group, which owns WFXT, a Fox affiliate in Boston known as Boston 25 News. According to Verizon, Cox’s contract with Verizon expires on December 15th. When a content deal expires, Verizon will have to renegotiate with content providers like Cox to keep the show on the air.
However, Verizon says the real possibility of these negotiations failing is real.
“We are working hard to negotiate with them and reach a new agreement. While we remain committed to making it available, we do not fully agree with such an unwarranted increase,” the company said in a statement.
Negotiations between DISH Networks and Cox fell through after a previous deal expired last month. As a result, his WFXT is no longer available to his DISH subscribers in the Boston market.
Cox also owns a Fox affiliate in Rhode Island and an NBC affiliate in the Pittsburgh area, both of which would be affected.
