A group of musicians with big brass instruments occupied the food court at the Salina Central Mall on Saturday.
The Kansas Wesleyan Music Authority returned to Salina on Saturday, orchestrating a “TubaChristmas” event, a long-running celebration of tuba and euphonium players.
“Tuba Christmas” is a worldwide celebration of tuba and euphonium players that began in 1974 to celebrate the famous tuba instructor William Bell. In 2010 Salina musicians participated for the first time. The carols played are specially arranged for tuba and euphonium.
KWU Music Dean Dr. James McAllister conducted the Salina “Tuba Christmas” ensemble. Following the morning rehearsal area, tuba and euphonium players performed at the Central Mall.
McAllister told KSAL News that the “TubaChristmas” ensemble is made up of 30 local musicians traveling to remote Augusta, Hayes and Concordia. The musician was as young as a high school student and as old as a retiree.
