White cloud-The White Cloud volleyball team took to court Wednesday night in the district semifinals. They slipped past the Ravenna bulldogs in five sets to reach the district final.
The Bulldogs started the night with a 10-3 lead. White Cloud struggled to gain a foothold early on, with mis-hits and sluggish serve returns plaguing the Indians. The tall Ravenna front court, led by junior Ellery Moy, also posed a major challenge for the Indians. Moy finished with 11 kills and he had 7 blocks. Ravenna won the first set 25-18.
In the second set, Ravenna made a mistake and the pressure increased from the Indians, giving White Cloud an early lead. The Bulldogs put the play away and tied the set at 21. After a back-and-forth battle, White Cloud came out on top with a 28-26 win and the first set. Senior Gabby Reeve scored an ace on the final point for the Indians.
Ravenna jumped to a 10-1 lead in the third set and never looked back. The Riverolidia Molly went on his way to a 25-17 win as he hit three aces to put the Bulldogs up 2-1.
A back and forth battle in the fourth set eventually gave way to a 25-19 victory for White Cloud, tying the match in two sets apiece.
White Cloud’s backcourt stepped up in the fifth set and blocked many points by the Bulldog attacker. The Indian defense, coupled with some unforced errors from Ravenna, resulted in a 15-8 White Cloud win.
Dejira Estrait, Head Coach of White Cloud, said: “This season we struggled to work through our mistakes, but tonight we were able to clean them up and move forward.”
White Cloud advances to the district final against Kent City. The game is scheduled for Thursday at 6pm (tonight).
