Unfortunately, not everyone has access to a fiber internet connection. Especially here in Malaysia. YTL, which aims to provide broadband internet at speeds comparable to fiber optic internet, Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite GatewayHow is it delivered? Check out our first impressions of the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway below.
Looking like a mini humidifier, the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway takes up little space, but requires a nearby power socket. There is no power button on the main unit, and the power turns on when the power is turned on. It doesn’t require a drill, but it doesn’t have a built-in battery, so it’s not very portable.
There is only one Yes logo on the front.
The top has cooling vents…yes, it looks like a mini humidifier
The back has a power socket, WPS button, USB Type C port and status LEDs.
Perhaps to not annoy people with flickering lights, the status LED is on the back, along with the power socket, RJ45 LAN socket, USB Type C port, and WPS button. It’s a bit annoying having to look at the back to see which status lights aren’t working properly.
The rest of the unit is white with a single Yes logo on the front and cooling vents on the top and bottom. Yes Slot for 5G SIM card is on the bottom with silicone cover.
The bottom of the unit is where you insert the Yes 5G SIM card. (I erased certain parts like passwords and other details)
Here’s what’s in the box
If you get a new pack, you may need to download the MyYes app to activate your SIM, but our packs are already set up so you won’t be able to see the process or tracking functionality in the app . This guide indicates that ID and face verification may be required to set up a MyYes account.
However, just like any other Yes SIM card, the MyYes app allows you to track usage, redeem databacks, top up your account, and more. Fi is accessible but can be customized like any other WiFi 6 router by opening 192.168.0.1 in your internet browser and entering the details under the unit.
According to the folks at Yes, the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway will offer internet speeds of up to 120 Mbps despite the fact that 5G can operate at top speeds of 1.5 Gbps. I expected the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway to consistently deliver speeds of around 120 Mbps, but unfortunately it doesn’t.
Rather, internet speeds near the unit were around 60 Mbps to 90 Mbps, and our test area was indeed on the Yes 5G-ready coverage map. slightly better than the Unified Fiber 100 Mbps package. A video speed test showed that the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway could easily handle his 4K video.
Ookla speed test around unit
Behind walls such as bathrooms, the Ookla speed test wasn’t as good, but still passable.
However, moving away from the unit or behind walls slows these down significantly. In the bathroom, for example, the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway delivered speeds of around 30 Mbps to 60 Mbps and mostly 1080p full HD video. This did not happen with the WiFi 6 router bundled with the unifi fiber 100 Mbps package.
When tested in games, the unit offers connections that fluctuate quite a bit in terms of stability. In Genshin Impact, connections or pings never turned red, instead they remained mostly yellow. This allows for relatively lag-free gaming, although it can be a little choppy at times.
Genshin Impact Game Test – Note the ping in the top right corner
Streaming video is fine, smooth with no lag, and most of the time the device stays relatively cool even when powered on for a while. devices and handled 4 test devices without issue.
We tested the Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinity Gateway in a torrential downpour and found the connectivity for games and downloads to be about the same. However, for streaming, connectivity dropped slightly from 4K to 1080p.
Ookla speed test in rainy weather was fine for general download speeds, but had issues with streaming
All in all, Yes 5G Wireless Fiber Infinite Gateway offers a stable internet connection option for Malaysians who do not have the option of using a real fiber connection. Of course, this means speed and connectivity are still heavily impacted due to coverage, so if you’re not in a Yes 5G coverage area, you should probably reconsider this.
Rates start at RM148 for router and unlimited 5G and calls. Another candidate for this is unifi’s broadband internet package. Yes, we have confirmed that you can connect the unit to a compatible WiFi 6 mesh router if you want to improve your connection, but no such mesh router bundle is available on the Yes site.
