To some extent I am not proud of these…but to another extent I am.
Key Point
- There have been times in my life when money was tight.
- I did some pretty crazy things to cut back on my spending, like filling up on samples and grabbing an extra napkin from the college cafeteria.
Saving money has always been important to me. But I have a decent amount of money in my savings account, so at this point in my life, I won’t go to extremes to earn a little extra.
Sure, you might decide to cut down on take-out meals and keep food costs down. And you may decide to travel by car instead of flying to save on vacation expenses. But none of these decisions really are.
But back in the day, I did some pretty things…let’s call them interesting Something to save money. And while I’m not necessarily proud of these moves, I’m also not ashamed to share them.
Discovered: This credit card has an unusual $300 welcome bonus
Details: These 0% Introductory APR Credit Cards are now on our best list
1. Steal napkins from the cafeteria at university and use them as toilet paper
College was a tough financial time for me. Money was always tight because I was paying for my education and not earning much from the various part-time jobs I was holding back. As a result, we sometimes had to get creative to keep our credit card charges to a minimum. And one of the habits I developed was to take extra napkins home from the dining hall so I didn’t have to buy my own.
I didn’t just use it as a napkin. Sometimes, when I felt like I was being a little too frugal for my own good, they doubled as toilet paper.
2. Lunch at Costco with free samples
When I moved to the suburbs to live with my now-husband, I quit my full-time job and became a freelancer. I had a good amount of savings, but I also didn’t have a steady line-up of jobs. Also, since we weren’t married yet, I couldn’t join his company’s plan and I was paying a lot for health insurance.
One day, while shopping at Costco, I realized I was hungry.Instead of spending a few bucks at the Costco food court, We loaded up with free samples until we were full. The next time I went to Costco, I purposely skipped lunch and relied on samples instead.
3. Save money on car rentals by traveling with strangers
Before I met my husband, I lived in a big city and didn’t have a car. A friend and I were desperate to get away for the holiday weekend, but we were both strapped for cash and couldn’t shake the rental. You decide to accept an invitation to go on a 9-hour road trip with a stranger.
To be fair, these strangers were friends of friends, so we didn’t feel we were risking our safety by accepting their offer. Otherwise, I’d rather borrow my own car than hop into someone’s car I’ve only seen for 90 minutes.
We’ve definitely done things in our time to boost our personal finances. And I don’t think I’m ready to repeat them, but at least , you can admit to yourself that you have thought outside the box.
