California Air Travelers Help Fund College Scholarships

by
January 31, 2023

San Diego (Border Report) — The aircraft, known as the Cross Border Xpress, or CBX, is very good at getting air travelers across the border to Tijuana airport for destinations within Mexico. Next month, we will help California students get into college.

The facility has partnered with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego and a group called the MAAC Project to raise college scholarships.

Travelers will have the opportunity to contribute at the facility or online when purchasing CBX tickets.

Carlos González Gutierrez, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, said:

Banners like these are placed within Cross Border Xpress to encourage travelers to donate to programs that raise funds for college scholarships that benefit impoverished Latinx students in the San Diego area. (Salvador Rivera/Border Report)

Gonzalez says all the money raised will be turned into individual $1,000 scholarships given to underprivileged Latino students.

“We hope this will enhance our fundraising efforts and enhance our opportunities to help more students,” he said.

The project is called “Volando Juntos” or “Flying Together” and is part of the Colibrí MX Scholarship program aimed at helping Latino students starting their university education in the fall of 2023.

According to program guidelines, students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, need financial support, and reside in San Diego County.

Students who qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program can request additional support of $500.

Additionally, a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate high levels of resilience.

“I don’t think there’s a better way to support San Diego’s Latinx community than by helping the next generation access college,” Gonzalez said. “Her 52% of all her K-12 students in California are of Latino descent, and enabling these students to attend and graduate from college will benefit society as a whole. .”

The fundraising campaign at CBX will run until the end of February.
