Dell’s first 16-inch gaming laptop is now shipping starting at US$1140 for a base configuration with a Core i7-12700H CPU, with Core i9-12900H options for even more. We recently tested the unit, courtesy of the manufacturer, and found that both the CPU and GPU performed better than average. Its Core i7-12700H CPU and GeForce RTX 3060 GPU are each around 10% faster than other laptops with the same processor or graphics.
However, there is one notable issue related to CPU temperature when running games. The GPU stabilizes at a reasonable (but very warm) 86 C, while the CPU stabilizes at a very high 96 C or slightly higher, as shown in the screenshot below. Of course, it’s not particularly dangerous, but most other gaming laptops, such as the Asus Zephyrus M16 and Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, can keep his CPU temperature below 80 C under similar circumstances.
Core temperatures above 100 C can be considered a danger zone, especially for long periods of time. At an average of 96 C, the Dell G16’s Core i7-12700H is running uncomfortably close, and one can only imagine how the high-end Core i9-12900H configuration would handle.
