Sen. Bernie Sanders earned $2.5 million from book advances and royalties from 2011 through 2022, according to his annual financial disclosures. During that period, political committees for the Vermont independent bought $843,000 worth of books from his publishers.
Sanders’ haul as an author is $420,000 more than what he earned over those 12 years in his day job as a senator. (Although Sanders was elected in 2006, the Senate Office of Public Records’ website only has his annual financial disclosures going back through 2011.)
Sanders’ debut, a memoir titled “Outsider in the House,” reached book sellers in 1997. The release of a second edition in 2015, now titled “Outsider in the White House,” was pegged to his first run for the presidency and marked the beginning of a creative surge. He’s gone on to write four more books, most recently “It’s Ok To Be Angry About Capitalism,” which was released in February.
In 2019, Forbes estimated Sanders’ fortune at $2.5 million.
Ethics rules do not bar senators from receiving book advances or royalties. The Federal Election Commission allows political committees to buy a candidate’s book so long as the lawmaker does not profit from the transaction.
Spokespeople for Sanders did not respond to inquiries.
