PARKERSBURG — The 14th Annual Feed Seniors Now Food Drive, hosted by Comfort Keepers of Belpré, is underway in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Drop-off points where the familiar red cans can be used as preserved food are located in designated areas throughout the region.
“At Comfort Keepers, we believe that everyone deserves to live with connection, purpose and joy. For seniors in our community, the best quality of life begins with meeting their basic needs.” .” Comfort Keepers of the Mid-Ohio Valley CEO David Yeomans said: “We can’t fight all the factors that affect hunger, but we can do more in this community, from raising awareness about the problem, raising donations, and educating families about the signs of hunger and malnutrition in older adults.” You can start.”
A 2020 study by Feeding America found that 5.2 million people over the age of 60 face hunger, which is 1 in 15 or 6.8% of all seniors. Hunger affects health and nutrition in older adults and puts them at risk for chronic health conditions such as depression, asthma and diabetes.
Age-related changes and changing dietary needs can make healthy eating more challenging for older adults. Health risks associated with malnutrition include a weakened immune system, poor wound healing, muscle weakness, weight loss, and dental problems.
“The good news is that there are things our community can do to ensure that nutritional needs are met.” Yeomans said. “We are grateful to our community partners who contribute so much to this cause each year.”
