As part of our analysis of how these inspiring entrepreneurs, executives and entertainers built their companies and careers, forbes I did some research and gave each member of the list a self-made score. The purpose is to provide some background on where these women started and how many hurdles they had to overcome to get to where they are today.

We first created this scoring system for the 2014 annual Forbes 400 U.S. Billionaires List. A score of 1 to 5 indicates that the individual has inherited his or her wealth, while a score of 6 to 10 indicates the stage of self-building. In our list of self-made women, by definition, no one inherited their fortunes, so we used a score from 6 to 10 to reflect that they have built their fortunes. doing.

Here’s what the scores mean and some examples of each.:
