The High School Innovation Challenge @ Dahlgren Robotics Competition allows students to build robots and use their command and control, sensing, navigation and sensor skills to compete for cash prizes and her year’s worth of bragging rights. And it’s back after 2 years!
Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) is seeking teams of high school students from public, private, and governor’s schools from Richmond to Stafford and across the Northern Neck. The deadline to register for the contest, which will be held March 31-April 1, 2023 at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) Dahlgren Campus, is January 6, 2023.
NSWCDD, UMW, MITER Corporation, and the Fredericksburg Regional Military Affairs Council are working together to bring this STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) opportunity to students in the region. The Innovation Challenge @ Dahlgren aims to highlight the need to integrate more of his STEM learning into the classroom, presenting programs of this kind in the Fredericksburg area and beyond.
“We are excited to join our partners in hosting our second annual Innovation Challenge @ Dahlgren. Engaging students to explore the world of STEM is our priority,” said NSWCDD Chief Technology Officer. says Jennifer Clift. “They are our future leaders in everything from software development to artificial intelligence.”
In this two-day competition, high school students establish communication with a small robot on wheels, program it to steer a mat, navigate ‘sea’ and ‘land’, then detect, acquire, and target targets. You are asked to act. The winner splits the expected winnings.
“UMW’s Dahlgren campus is partnering with NSWCDD on an innovation challenge for local high school students focused on robotics and coding,” said Troy Paino, president of Mary Washington. “We are excited to see what our students will create and code next, and to continue this strong collaboration.”
The first High School Challenge took place in April 2022, with 12 public, private, and governor schools participating. Fredericksburg Christian School took top honors, Lancaster High School was his second, and Bridging Communities Governor’s School was his third. For more information, see the UMW news article.
