Taxes and fees, including pesky destination fees (premium Wi-Fi, fitness center access, long distance calls, a bottle of water, etc.) add over $50 a night in cash.

Disadvantage
- Sparse lobby with limited seating in case you need to kill time waiting for check-in or pick up car.
- Onsite dining options are either expensive (Parker’s) or very busy (Burger Joint).
- The hotel charges a nasty $35 destination fee for a cash stay of little value.
- The upper floor (known as Upper Stories) has its own lounge and upgraded exterior, but is not eligible for Hyatt upgrades.
vibe
Thompson Central Park is a quiet, sophisticated retreat from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding streets. The Midtown Manhattan location appeals to both first-time New Yorkers and those already familiar with the city but wanting to enjoy nearby activities and destinations such as Central Park and Broadway shows near Times Square is.
Modern, dark, moody and spacious, the lobby features pops of beige and brown thanks to soaring 36-foot-high ceilings and bright artwork and dramatic reds thoughtfully hung throughout the first floor. It features a palette of A curtain that “hides” a popular burger joint.
The overall design is dark and peaceful, ideal for guests seeking respite from the energy of nearby Times Square, but may lack seating for guests who need a place to spend time.
room
In all three “test” stays conducted by TPG staff with Globalist status, standard room reservations were upgraded to 450-square-foot studio king suites. This is pretty luxurious by my usual Manhattan hotel standards.

Dark wood floors are complemented by white walls and ceilings and gold accents throughout. The ‘kitchen’ area has a breakfast bar with stools comfortable enough for morning work. And the full-size green crushed velvet sofa was comfy for watching TV or inviting guests over for pre-dinner cocktails.
The revolving TV with mirror was stylish and practical, making it easy to watch TV from the couch or bed. A king-sized bed with 400-thread-count Italian linens seemed to sink into the clouds.
Despite its proximity to Central Park, most of the hotel’s rooms do not have a view of the park. Because the skyscrapers to the north are vying with each other for his million-dollar views. My room’s dirty south-facing windows offered little view beyond the apartments and offices across the street from 56th Street.

The bathroom, like the rest of the room, was a good size, but there was only one dressing table. The walk-in shower with dual showerheads and toiletries from Brooklyn-based DS & Durga was a joy to start the day. The tenugui’s cheeky message, “Please take it off,” seemed at odds with the understated luxury of the rest of the room. It generally felt on par with what you see at the Waldorf Astoria.

eating and drinking
During our stay in late 2021, a Hyatt Globalist room service breakfast was included while the hotel completed some of its final opening phases. The steak and eggs were perfectly cooked and the mini bottles of ketchup and mayonnaise were a cute touch. The cappuccino arrived wrapped in plastic, but it tasted perfect even for those who are fussy about Italian-style coffee.
Subsequent stays in 2022 and early 2023 did not mention the Globalist room service option, so it may have been an oversight. Or it could be the current location to cash in on Globalist benefits and start the day as the restaurant is now fully operational.
Speaking of which, Parker’s Avocado Toast, Crispy French Toast, and Fruit Bowl are all great. If you pay in cash, they’re $20-$30 each (yes, fruit bowls too), so budget accordingly.

Next to the reception area is an unexpected but reportedly excellent ‘hidden’ burger joint. Unless viewed through the lens that the Thompson brand’s goal is to blend luxury stays with authentic urban and local experiences, it can feel out of place. There is often a line during meal times, so be prepared to eat outside or wait.

Amenities and services
The hotel’s fitness center has a variety of aerobics equipment for those who want to keep fit during their stay. Next to the gym was a nail salon and hairdresser, but it looked like it belonged in a shopping mall rather than a luxury spa.
The service here is often very proactive, with doormen being quick to help with bags, quickly converting a sofa bed when asked, and attentive service in restaurants. I’m here.

Not at home
The convenience of being a 5 minute walk from Central Park and close to Billionaire’s Row is great. If you go out exploring, chances are you’ll see Manhattan’s ultra-rich elite. You can easily grab a takeaway lunch from one of his various street vendors near the entrance to Central Park (try the halal lamb over rice). Enjoy the park and people watching. For something more elaborate, nearby La Grande Boucherie offers a gorgeous Paris-inspired atrium for airy dining.
Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center (with its dreamy, revelry ice rink in the winter and roller-skating rink in the warmer months), and the Museum of Modern Art are also just a few blocks away.
accessibility
The hotel is very accessible and there are no steps for the entire stay.
The entrance, lobby, and hall are laid out in a spacious and spacious manner, creating barrier-free passages that lead from the general entrance to the guest rooms. The gym is located on the lower floor, accessed through a separate entrance next door, but connected by a lift for easy access.
check out
The Thompson Central Park is a great choice if you want a nice full-service hotel in a five-star location, but don’t want or want the high-end luxuries of the Park Hyatt or the St. Regis New York. On the flip side, if the price and amenities are still more than you need, check out the Grayson, which can be booked from 17,000 World of Hyatt points.
But as far as Thompson Central Park is concerned, the rooms are well designed and comfortable, the Hyatt Globalist benefits and breakfast are excellent, and the prime location makes it a great addition to New York’s competitive luxury hotel scene.
