ZANESVILLE – Jim Nicholson has been named a recipient of the 2023 Richard O. Johnson Civic Leadership Award through the Muskingum County Community Foundation.
The honor will be presented to Nicholson at the Foundation’s annual Groundhog Day Celebration on January 27 at the Zane State University Campus Center.
Nicholson was born and raised in Lancaster. After he graduated from Union High School in Fairfield, he earned his degree at Muskingham College (now Muskingham College).
Before moving to Zanesville, Nicholson worked for a major accounting firm and played a minor season in baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He then joined First in Zanesville in 1990 as Chief Financial Officer and became Chief Executive Officer in 1996.
Nicholson moved to Canton in 2002 when he became President and CEO of Unizan Bank, a newly formed company that merged two banks. Throughout this role, Nicholson was part of his leadership team of multiple executives at banking institutions in Northeast Ohio. In 2015, Nicholson returned to Zanesville, North, where he became president and CEO of Valley Bank.
Since returning to Zanesville, Nicholson has served on the board of directors of the Zanesville-Muskingham County Chamber of Commerce and Muskingum Family Y. He is a board member of the Ohio Bankers League, the Genesis Healthcare System, and the Bethesda Care System. Nicholson has also coached his sports youth for 20 years in the Canton and Zanesville areas.
Nicholson is married to Melanie, whom he met while attending Muskingum College. They have her three adult children and her one grandson.
The Johnson Awards were established in 2000 by the Muskingham County Community Foundation Board of Directors to honor individuals who have demonstrated outstanding civic leadership in Muskingham County. The award has three parts: to honor the achievements of the recipients, to honor Dick Johnson’s achievements, and to encourage others to become future recipients.
Tickets to attend the Groundhog Day Celebration are available online exclusively at mccf.org. For more information, please contact the Foundation at info@mccf.org or 740-453-5192.
