Clubs are some of the lucrative places for young girls to get jobs, whether part-time or full-time.
And as is the case with young deejays and karaoke hosts, clubs provide the perfect sideline source of funding for mature campus city girls.
It’s a place where you can make a quick profit, especially if you’re training for a hospitality job. It’s also a good place to serve young girls who like to party and meet new people. In Nairobi, which has a vibrant nightlife, it is said that most club hostesses are now university students.
When Ivy* stumbled across an advertisement that the club was looking for a hostess and waitress, he knew that getting one of these two would be a financial lifeline. A college junior living in Nairobi, she, like most of her friends, uses her free weekends to make something to pay her bills in this dire financial situation. was Besides, the waitress job was something she had tried before and was successful.
As instructed, she attended an interview where she met hundreds of girls, mostly college students, who were also interested. And after waiting in line for her five hours, when it was her turn she was ushered into her interview room.
“They asked me a lot of questions, some of which were pretty personal and humiliating, such as whether I had a boyfriend or whether I practiced protected sex. So I had to reply and keep my cool. But the last ritual was no for me.They asked me to take off my clothes to check my body size. But I refused and ended up running out of the room and never looking back,” says Ivy*.
Club waitresses face many challenges, including managers requesting sexual favors and mishandling clients while they are still serving them at work.
“Most patrons who visit the club do not realize that they have their own social life away from the club work. You may be married, you may be in a serious relationship. Hmm.
“From businessmen to politicians, these men keep throwing money at you as bait, and morally weak waitresses eventually fall for them. It’s rampant because we see it as a way to earn extra income to make up for low wages,” she adds.
She said some managers would punish waitresses for refusing to tear down lines when they made illegal requests, and one could be assigned a double shift. That means she hasn’t had any days off in her week. Or even terminate the contract claiming that the customer is not satisfied with your service.
“Most of the time it’s the older drunk men who hit you, not the younger men who actually show up with their girlfriends. How do 22-year-old older men expect me to feel their vibes, even if they’re real,” she says.
