
In keeping with its goal of increasing minority representation in marine research and aquarium science, the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium has announced the appointment of Amanda Felix to the position of President and CEO, Diversity and Inclusion Advisor. The newly created position builds on Mote’s national leadership initiative to increase participation of underrepresented minorities in marine research and aquarium science.
Accepting this appointment will allow Felix to continue his research as Biologist III at the Mote Aquarium while also allowing Mote to participate in the ongoing National Science Foundation (NSF) Lewis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation: Marine Science Laboratory Alliance Center of Excellence. (MarSci -LACE), and related programs. She coordinates and leads meetings with key stakeholders for the Aquarium Sciences REU program and other programs related to diversity and inclusion in her Mote, and promotes Mote diversity and inclusion programs. Felix interned at Mote in 2014 and became a full-time staff member the following year. She will report to Mote’s President and CEO, Dr. Michael P. Crosby, and will serve as the liaison to Mote’s internship program and other related diversity and inclusion programs, both inside and outside of Mote. She is also responsible for the development, management, recruitment and expansion of such programs with the goal of increasing minority participation in the aquarium population of undergraduate interns, staff and volunteers through experiential learning and training opportunities.
