With less than a month to go before COP27, more than 10,000 people have called on governments to fulfill their promises to fix their broken food systems.
Last year in Glasgow the UK signed the Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land Use. With this, the government has committed to supporting sustainable agriculture that promotes food security and benefits the environment.
But since Glasgow there has been little or no progress. The consequences are severe, with nearly 50 million people in East Africa at risk of starvation as a devastating drought continues to ravage the region.
Leading up to COP27, CAFOD, a leading international development charity, has engaged communities in England and Wales to secure their support to ask governments to deliver on their promises in 2021.
The petition shows strong support for a global agricultural system that grows food in ways that are good for people and the planet, rather than focusing on land-destroying, toxic chemical-using approaches.
Ahead of the COP, CAFOD Public Policy Officer Graham Gordon said:
“At COP26 last year, the UK pledged to support a sustainable model of agriculture that puts people and the environment first, but has made little progress. , the UK needs to step up and put people and the environment first.”
CAFOD supporters filed a petition today, Wednesday, October 19, 2022, with the Foreign Federal Development Agency on King Charles Street.
This petition was established by CAFOD in April 2022. This is because CAFOD continues its efforts to pressure governments to fulfill his COP26 commitments.
The petition calls for farming systems that address the climate crisis by putting local communities at the center so that food systems work not just for big business, but for local communities.
