If you had the chance to live forever, would you do it?
11-year-old Winnie Foster, main character in the musical Tuck Everlasting, We ponder this very question after the Tuck family offers her eternal life.Tuck Everlasting, presented by the Purple Crayon Players, takes place this weekend at the McCormick Auditorium. Tickets are free and can be booked through Eventbrite.
PCP Northwestern Theater for Young Audience Theater Board. Communication College sophomore Lili Tarnopol, who plays Winnie, said that the two main audience groups that are attracted to the show are college students and children.
Despite the show’s appeal to younger viewers, Tarnopol emphasized her personal connection to the show as a college student who feels her youth is coming to an end. Upon discovering its importance, Tarnopol said he wanted his audience to realize that aging is not something to be afraid of, but something beautiful.
Communications Jr. and director Francis Mary McKittrick believes the musical “shows this level of enjoyment that can be enjoyed even as an adult.”
“You have to pay your utility bills. It’s half a fear attack. But you can get your friends to eat wine and cheese in your first apartment. It feels great,” McKittrick said. increase.
McKittrick said the show also tackles the theme of embracing differences. She said that the famous Immortal Family, the Tuxes, are locked out because they can’t grow old.
When people feel insecure about their differences, we need to be open about sharing it.
Winnie is one of the first characters to accept Tux’s gift of eternal life, and Tux realizes that we must love each other more than ever.
Tarnopol said “Tuck Everlasting” does not patronize viewers, unlike other TYA shows.
“We can be honest with our kids and be honest with them…and they’ll get it,” said communications senior and producer Clay Rowhead.
Winnie learns to deal with complex themes throughout the show, such as life, loss, love, and grief that children begin to understand all too well.
These themes can be daunting for both adults and children, Lawhead said, but they’re still important to explore. Tarnopol echoed this sentiment by promising that everyone who comes to see the show will resonate in some way, as its themes are universal.
“It’s rare to find yourself in a show where you really need to hear the message it gives,” she said, “but this is definitely one of them.”
Immortal Tux remains unchanged as he passes the screens that record the years gone by.
