Grade 6 students at St. Mary’s Catholic Community School in Crown Point recently completed an exciting hands-on project centered around building a gingerbread house using descriptive writing. Each student individually assumed the role of a real estate agent. The students then had to write a sentence encouraging potential buyers to purchase the gingerbread house. I had to turn boring sentences into detailed explanations. Once completed, I created an illustrated flyer to promote the sale of gingerbread houses. Finally, students created a physical model of the house using graham crackers, Christmas candy, icing, and more. fun!
