Audiophiles will likely lament the latest change to the digital entertainment credit offered on The Platinum Card® from American Express (terms apply, see rates & fees). As of May 8, 2024, SiriusXM purchases will no longer be eligible for this benefit.

The loss of SiriusXM is the second hit to the Amex Platinum card’s digital entertainment credit in recent memory. Less than six months ago, Audible was also removed from the list of eligible providers. To its credit, Amex added The Wall Street Journal to the list last fall, indicating these changes may be business as usual.

What’s Covered With the Amex Platinum Digital Entertainment Credit?

Amex Platinum cardholders can get up to $20 in statement credits each month when using the card to pay for eligible purchases with these providers:

  • Disney+
  • A Disney+ bundle (Disney+ with ESPN+ and Hulu or Disney+ and Hulu)
  • ESPN+
  • Hulu
  • The New York Times
  • Peacock
  • The Wall Street Journal

Enrollment is required, so be sure to click the “Enroll Now” button in your Amex account for the digital entertainment credit.

More About Amex Platinum Credits and Benefits

The Amex Platinum has a high annual fee, even among its premium card competitors like the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (rates & fees) and Chase Sapphire Reserve®. To ease the pain of the $695 annual fee, the Amex Platinum offers a number of credits and benefits that can help offset it (terms apply and enrollment may be required). Among them are:

  • $240 digital entertainment credit (up to $20 a month in statement credits)
  • $200 annual airline fee credit
  • $200 annual hotel credit
  • $12.95 monthly credit (plus taxes) for a Walmart+ membership
  • $200 in Uber cash ($15 each month and $35 in December)
  • $189 in statement credit to cover a CLEAR® Plus membership
  • Up to $100 to cover Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® application fees
  • $300 credit for Equinox club membership or Equinox+ subscription
  • $300 toward the purchase of a SoulCycle at-home bike
  • $100 credit at Saks Fifth Avenue ($50 semi-annually)

Current and prospective cardholders who can use all or several of these credits organically can easily get their money’s worth out of the annual fee. The card also includes valuable trip protections, insurance, airport lounge access and most recently, a partnership with award travel search engine Point.me.

The partnership with Point.me can help novice travel rewards enthusiasts find ways to use the generous welcome bonus that comes with the Amex Platinum card: Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards Points after spending $8,000 on purchases on the card in the first 6 months of card membership.

Amex Offers, a benefit of most Amex cards including the Platinum card, provide another avenue to put your regular spending to work, earning statement credits or bonus points for purchases.

Bottom Line

We never like to see benefits removed, especially those as popular as SiriusXM. A representative from Amex says there are no plans to add another service to the list of eligible providers. With seemingly never-ending fee increases and benefits like this being decommissioned, will the Amex Platinum card be a victim of death by a thousand cuts? Card members may grow weary of trying to master the coupon book of credits as options get slowly removed.
