The authors of Money touted Somerville for its delicious fluff festivals, bountiful breweries, and schools, but the city was also praised by the Bureau of Racial and Social Justice. The department, which operates through the mayor’s office, works to “eliminate institutional and structural systems that create racial inequality, social disparity and injustice,” according to the city’s website.
Somerville also scored highly for its proximity to public transportation and top universities such as Harvard, MIT and, of course, Tufts, which is based in Somerville.
All access doesn’t come cheap. Money magazine puts the median home price in Somerville at $818,437. But that’s significantly lower than the median year-to-date compiled by The Warren Group, which tracks local real estate trends. They peg the median home price in Somerville at $1,150,000.

According to Money, Milton ranks 17th on points for “tree-lined streets”, low crime rate and excellent schools. But the magazine also draws attention to the lush 7,000-acre Blue Hills Preserve in Milton (and Quincy, Dedham and Randolph) and the Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center, which dates back to 1885.
The Money List says, “Compared to other Boston suburbs, Milton’s real estate is in an affordable price range (albeit higher than the national median).” Milton’s median home price is listed at $787,500, while the median home price is $905,095 year-to-date, according to Warren Group.
Two other New England communities also made it onto Money’s list of the 50 Best Places to Live. South Burlington, Vermont ranked 34th and Nashua, New Hampshire ranked 44th.
According to Money, the top ranked city was Atlanta. Among the reasons; strong employment growth, a diverse population, excellent universities and a great culinary scene.
“For everyone, Atlanta is a place where you can feel at home. And just as importantly, it’s a place where you can find work,” the magazine said.
