Alabaster – Students from the Thompson Middle School National Junior Honor Society recently sold 422 pairs of shoes as part of a JDRF fundraiser.
The fundraiser will focus on raising funds for the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, which seeks to help find a cure for diabetes by selling paper “sneakers.”
ACS Talented Expert Michael Wilbanks said:
The annual fundraiser is a time when students focus on raising money for a cause, and the JDRF Walk is held at the Birmingham Zoo in Birmingham.
About 50 students collected about 800 pairs of shoes for the fundraiser this year, Wilbanks said. Last year, about 1,000 pairs of shoes were sold and the number of students nearly doubled.
“It’s been amazing to see this year’s students work so hard to get the word out,” Wilbanks said.
Held across the country, Walk to Cure Diabetes is the nation’s largest fundraising event for diabetes research, according to JDRF.
Wilbanks said the paper sneakers sold by TMS students will be on display throughout TMS hallways in the next few weeks until the end of the school year in May.
“This is something that students really enjoy participating in,” says Wilbanks. “Every year is a valuable experience.”
