United Airlines has upgraded its mobile app with new self-service features that allow customers to book flights, track baggage and get hotel and dining coupons if their flight is canceled or delayed.
Introduced at the peak of travel this summer, the app’s new features can help passengers battling intense frustration with crowded airports, overcrowded planes and flight disruptions.
The updated app will notify United travelers if flights are delayed or cancelled, and give them individualized options to rebook flights. The self-service aspect gives customers a choice instead of standing in line at the airport or waiting on the phone to speak to a customer service representative.

What’s new in the United app and how it works
- personalization. If your flight is canceled or delayed by more than an hour, you’ll automatically see your personalized options on the United app home screen.
- Opt-in text alerts. Travelers who opt for text notifications should receive an alert message with a link to the app. If you have already entered your flight information in the app, the home screen will prompt you for the next steps.
- Help with rebooking. In some cases, United may automatically rebook your flight. The app will contain that information. If you prefer to book flights yourself, you can do so using the airline schedules in the app.
- Parcel tracking. Passengers can also track their luggage. If your flight is cancelled, you’ll want to know where your luggage is so it can be returned to United Airlines.
- voucher. Eligible travelers can access hotel, dining and rideshare coupons through the app.
- More Customer Service Channels. Users can connect with customer service via phone, text chat, or video chat.
Travel delays are increasing.How to minimize risk
United Airlines is one of the three most punctual airlines as of March 2023, with 76.9% of its flights arriving on time. The remaining two companies were Delta Air Lines (79.2%) and Alaska Airlines (78.1%).
However, data from the US Department of Transportation show that airlines’ overall on-time arrival rates are down slightly month-over-month and year-over-year.
The on-time arrival rate in March 2023 was 75.4%, down from 79.4% in February 2023 and 77.2% in March 2022.
Shortages of personnel (3,000 air traffic controllers short as of May) combined with bad weather have led to an increase in flight cancellations and delays.
