84, Pennsylvania — After 24 years as an Associate at 84 Lumber, John Vincent continues to use his military career experience to solve, lead and manage team problems.
Vincent spent six years in the infantry, serving as an E-5 team member, team leader, and eventually squad leader.His assignment included serving at 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. A multinational force and observer based in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
“Serving here and abroad has been an experience I will never forget and has definitely shaped my career with 84 Lumber,” says Vincent. “My team has people from all branches of the military and we understand each other. A common theme across all branches is the desire to succeed through teamwork.”
Vincent continues, this is one of the biggest reasons he enjoys and recommends working with veterans.
“Veterans understand friendship and seek it outside of military service,” he says.
That’s what prompted Vincent from California to explore a career at 84 Lumber, the company says. Impressed by the opportunity to continue to manage and lead people, as well as continuous promotion from within, he eventually joined 84 Lumber in 1998 as a manager trainee.
“With the leadership training I received in the military, my goal was to lead a team and become a store manager,” he says. “It was easy to associate working in a store with military service. After all, both require a team of people working together to achieve a goal. provide an opportunity for
Vincent started as an 84 Lumber Manager trainee in Goodlettsville, Tennessee and was promoted to Co-Manager in Donelson, Tennessee after just eight months. Less than a year later, he was promoted again, this time to manager of 84 Lumber his store in Russellville, Kentucky. Soon after, Vincent managed his two stores in Goodlettsville and Franklin, Tennessee before becoming his area manager for the Tennessee/Alabama area in 2005.
Vincent is currently balancing his career and spending time with his family. He and his wife Kim, 26, have two daughters from him named Caitlin and Marissa. While on vacation, Vincent and his family raise chickens, goats, and pigs at their home in Columbia, Tennessee.
Reflecting on his military career and success with 84 Lumber, Vincent firmly believes that how you treat people is your greatest asset.
“If you build your business out of relationships, not transactions, you have customers for life,” says Vincent.
